Jimmy Decotis emerged from the pack with the early lead for almost a lap before getting passed by Colt Nichols. Nichols only held the lead for a couple turns and then had a big crashed that knocked him out of the race. Decotis regained the lead but again only held it for less than a lap, this time getting passed by Dylan Ferrandis. Then another lap later Adam Cianciarulo got past him for second place.
Ferrandis held the lead for the rest of the race. Cianciarulo kept close most of the way, but wasn’t able to try to make a move for the lead until the final lap, but he wasn’t able to get past Ferrandis.
Shane McElrath pulled out of the heat race with a back injury.
450 Class
Zach Osborne got the holeshot with Marvin Musquin close behind. Musquin quickly got past Osborne for the lead. Osborne faded back, making room for Ken Roczen and Cole Seely to move into podium positions. Eli Tomac moved past Seely with about 14 minutes left. Musquin, Roczen and Tomac held their positions the rest of the way without much of a challenge.
Cooper Webb started in seventh place and slowly worked his way up to a fourth place finish.
Chad Reed and Justin Brayton were involved in a first lap crash that ended their nights and likely their seasons. When Musquin came through the red cross flag section where Reed and Brayton were being attended to, he did not slow down enough through the section and was penalized points equal to two positions plus two more points for a total of a seven-point penalty. But he still is credited with the win.
