Age of Future Champions

Supercross races first began in 1972, but 1974 was the first year that Supercross was a full series.  Pierre Karsmakers won that first 250 championship.  The 250 class is now called the 450 class.

For the first 11 years of Supercross, there was no 125 (250 four stroke) series, with the first 125 series being introduced in 1985.

Starting with Karsmakers, there have been 20 different champions in the premier class.  For the most part, these future champions were quite young when they joined the premier class.  Every champion from 1983-2016 was no older than 21 when they joined the class.

The last future champion to join the class older than 21 was Donnie Hansen, who won the championship in 1981.  Hansen was 27 when he first joined the class in 1979.

Here is the age of each champion when they first joined the 450/250 2-stroke class:

Ricky Johnson 17
Mark Barnett 17
Jeff Stanton 18
Jeff Ward 18
David Bailey 18
James Stewart 19
Chad Reed 19
Jean-Michel Bayle 19
Johnny O’Mara 19
Mike Bell 19
Jimmy Ellis 19
Ryan Dungey 20
Ryan Villopoto 20
Ricky Carmichael 20
Bob Hannah 20
Jim Weinert 20
Jeremy McGrath 21
Jeff Emig 21
Donnie Hansen 27
Pierre Karsmakers 27

Introduction

With this website, I will attempt to create a database of all American Supercross and Motocross results since the early 1970s.  Supercross unofficially began in 1972.  Motocross dates back a little further.

Finding complete results prior to 2003 will probably be a challenge, but I should be able to find at least the top 5 overall finishers for all races before then.

If there is demand, and a supply of data for other high level racing series in the United States (Arenacross?) or internationally, I would be open to adding that to the site, but that will not be a focus early on.
