San Diego, CA
Lots of rain fell early in the afternoon, to the point that practice and qualifying was cut short. The first 250 heat race was run during the rain, but then the rain stopped. The track switched from being wet and sloppy to being deep sticky mud. Each of the main events was shortened by five minutes.
250 Class
Adam Cianciarulo took the holeshot and went wire-to-wire for the win without ever being challenged. Points leader Colt Nichols had trouble in the mud early and was never a factor. Garrett Marchbanks started outside the top ten, but slowly worked his way through the field. With about four minutes left Marchbanks very slowly was able to pass Dylan Ferrandis for second place. Ferrandis was poised for a third place finish, but his bike quit running on the final lap and he fell to seventh.
450 Class
Ken Roczen got the holeshot but fell over in the mud before getting through the first turn and surrendering the lead to Eli Tomac. Justin Bogle was the only rider to stay close to Tomac early on, but he slowly fell further and further behind. With about two minutes left, Bogle stalled and got passed by Roczen for second place. Tomac’s only problem was when he got stuck on a tough block for a few seconds, but it wasn’t enough to let anybody catch him. Roczen looked set for a second place finish but made a little mistake one turn before the finish and let Marvin Musquin pass him.
