Ryan Dungey already clinched the championship, but there were still 2 other championships on the line. For the first time, the 250 East-West Shootout was paying points to both series.
Malcolm Stewart (14 points) and Cooper Webb (16 points) each took healthy leads into the final round, but neither lead was insurmountable.
The story of the night was the rain. Rain fell earlier in the day to get the track wet, and just before the heat races began the rain picked up again to make for a sloppy, muddy track all night long.
Riders were crashing all night long as they fought the mud. Some of the best riders were seen rolling through whoops as the thick mud prevented them from getting momentum going.
With all the mud causing long lap times, the main events were shortened to 12 and 16 laps. In the 250 main, Joey Savatgy took the early lead. Savatgy needed to make up 17 points on Webb to claim the championship. Colt Nichols was able to get by Savatgy on the second lap, but Savatgy retook the lead and held on for the win. With the win, Webb needed to finish in 12th or better to claim the championship. He spent most of the race hovering around 12th place, nursing an injured wrist. Webb ended up in 11th, winning the championship by one point.
Malcolm Stewart spent most of the race in third place, which would be good for a championship. After some early mechanical troubles, championship hopeful Aaron Plessinger worked his way up to fourth and finished less than a second behind Stewart.
With the 450 championship wrapped up, Dungey didn't have to ride conservatively, and jumped out to his usual holeshot in the main event. Ken Roczen worked his way up to second, and was able to get past Dungey on about the fifth lap. Just a couple turns later, Roczen crashed. Dungey also crashed in the same spot. But Roczen had damage to his machine, and had to pull out of the race. Jason Anderson was able to get within about 3 seconds of Dungey, but didn't stay there long and Dungey cruised to an 11-second victory. |
